Owning a Website in Nigeria

If you are thinking of running any type of business at all, sometime someday, you will need a website to compete in today's information driven economy. Business models are migrating from paper, files, brick and mortar to e-applications.

Nobody wants to get stuck in traffic when he can accomplish everything he needs to do with a phone call and a click of the button from the comfort of his office or home.

Hence owning a website is not subject to debate. The issue is, how do to go about it.

First and foremost, you need to understand that owning a website is not a big deal at all, neither does designing one by yourself, if you desire so to do. All you need is to understand english, have access to a computer, an html editor like Microsoft FrontPage (which comes with Microsoft Office), or other free editors you can download from the internet, and you are in business.

In terms of cost, for a medium website, you need about N6,000 per annum to pay for your hosting and renew your domain name. This will be dealt with in details later. So for N6,000 per annum, you can own a website, and if you choose to design it yourself (which we will walk you through later), that is all it takes to have it up and running (for a medium website).
The first and most crucial step is to decide what you want to do with your website (function). This will determine what type of website to go for, and if it is something you can do by yourself, or have a professional design one for you.

Also as important is the decision whether to build just a website, or a business.

Whatever route you take, we strongly recommend that you learn html which is the base code for most websites. All it takes is to go through a tutorial, and a bit of practice, and you are off and running. When you understand html, you can update and manage your website by yourself, even if you used a professional web designer to design your website for you. This way, you will not be at the mercy of anybody, to update your web content, or do a minor re-design of your site to suit your taste. This may not make sense to you now, but down the line, you will get to realise that launching your website and clinking glasses is not the end of the journey, but the beginning. The website will require updates, maintenance, fine tuning and optimizing (search engine optimization) to make it rank high in search engines and pull in prospective customers.

Ideally, each business should manage it's out website, and not contract out this function, effectively leaving yourself out of control. The other party can hold you to ransome, as they are the only ones that have access to the passwords and control panel. If you cannot afford to hire an in-house webmaster, you need to do it yourself. You cannot succeed online if you cannot update your website as and when due, instead of begging someone to update your site after they have been duly paid.

If you are just starting out, and you intend to run an online business, settle it with yourself upfront that you will be the webmaster, until the business is up and running, and makes enough money so that you can hire a webmaster to free yourself to focus on business development.

There are various types of websites, but in the Nigerian scenario, we will reduce it to five. These are not strict categorizations, as a site can have characteristics across the categories
-> a) Web Presence
-> b) E-commerce Website
-> c) Information Resource Website
-> d) Marketing Website
-> e) Forums

Introduction to Internet Home Based Business in Nigeria

Internet home business is an exciting frontier created by the advent of the internet. It is virgin territory in Nigeria, which makes in pretty much easier to get in and quickly create a niche for yourself.

An e-commerce enabled site is a business or shop where visitors/buyer from around the globe can pop in at any hour of the day, browse through, pick items of interest and proceed to check out, pay and zoom off, all without human intervention.

The owner of the site could be sleeping, playing with his children, on vacation or in church/mosque while this is going on.

Since this activity is taking place in cyberspace, the owner does not need a shop and attendants to be in business. He can operate from his parlour or bedroom.

A home-based business is the easiest business to start, in terms of capital outlay. All you need is a table and a chair, a computer system (PII at least) and internet access. If you have light, you are in business. That's all.

You don't need to rent a shop, get a carpenter to fit out the shop, get glass doors and gazebo, burglary proof and massive padlocks. You don't need to hire a staff nor put up a sign post and be harassed by state and local government for signage levies etc (you know their wahala). You don't need to take your bath, brush your mouth, dress up and go get stuck in Lagos traffic for hours, especially during the rainy season. You can wipe the sleep off your eyes and stroll in your pyjamas

One of the great things about running an online business is that your shop is open to the international community. You will find out that you may get more visitors from the US and EU that from Nigeria. That way you are not entirely dependent on the Nigerian market, that is, if your product has worldwide appeal, and can be downloaded from your site (e.g. an e-book). This does not even matter if you advertisements on your site, you still make your money irrespective of where the visitor is coming from. People can visit your site whether it is raining or not, whether there is a strike/public holiday or not, traffic jam or not, trailer has blocked the road or not, whether you have light or not, people can enter your shop 24/7. Nobody can shut down your site (except of course you are owing your web host, or have violated the terms of service). Also, no thief can break into the shop and steal your goods, and there is no crooked staff to run away with your money. As people in the US are waking up, those in Nigeria are working while those in Australia are going to bed, so at any point in time, there is someone awake, visiting your site.

Also it is very easy to mind your online business at your spare time, and monitor/operate it from anywhere in the world. With a physical business, you will be worried if your employees will run you to the ground. With an online business, you are the only employee in the early days. If you hire someone, you can track how much they have done since everything is online, and you can have your customers pay directly to the bank so that nobody handles cash. Most payments will be done online anyway. So if you have staff but you have to travel abroad, the only thing at risk is your computers and furniture, which you can insure.

The most important thing you need to start an online business in Nigeria is your brain. Look around for opportunities, look at where there is a gap, and fill it. Because internet is relatively new in Nigeria, there are so many gaps and opportunities. What you need to take advantage of it is to learn about building a website, promoting it to get good traffic and how to make money from the traffic you have brought to your site.

Be focused. Keep your eyes on providing services, give your visitors what they want, and soon, the money will come. You will get to a stage where you can hire someone to do the hard bit while you relax and use your brain to develop more superior strategies after mastering the basics.

We will cover all these aspects in articles in this section. All you need is determination, have a goal, make a choice, take a step and pay the price. You are in business. Welcome to the world of online business.

Me

Build Your Network The Right Way...

Building a massive network is what the business of Network Marketing is all about. The money is in your down line. This is where you want the majority of your money to be coming from because you do not have to do much for it. All you had to do was develop leaders. However, the only way you will find these leaders is by talking to A LOT of people.

You are there to guide them and get them to their full potential. Show them the ropes, and show them what they need to do, to be as successful as you. Take them out prospecting with you, tell them to come to the weekly briefings to see your teams presentations, show them how to present the system your team has set up, give them the personal development products they need to grow as a person and as a leader, and find their WHY. The WHY is critical, not only for your prospects, but for yourself as well, because every time that they are feeling lazy and unmotivated you can bring up their WHY to increase the chances of getting them back in action.

When talking to your prospects and recruits it is also important that you avoid talking about your own personal gains. They can care less about how your doing, they want to get the ball rolling for themselves, so show them how they can do that. Help make them some money. Develop Rapport with them and have genuine interest in them and their
own personal goals, this way they feel comfortable with you and as a result, you get in contact with their referrals. It becomes a win-win situation for both of you.

Furthermore, when developing your down line it is important that you focus on quality, rather than quantity. This is the problem that many people have; they have the quantity, but they do not have the quality because they were to busy focusing on recruiting rather than developing the leaders that they really needed to grow their business. A lot of
people will have a lot of people in their down line; however, become confused by the lack of production going on. This is because they lack quality, and they have no leaders to duplicate the system for them. Another important note you should make is that you should work with the willing and the hungry. Usually you will find that the people that are the hungriest to achieve something more in life are the leaders that will lead your team and duplicate for you.

Moreover, something that I can not stress enough is FOLLOW UP! It is critical that you follow up with people. Network Marketing is not the traditional route to success for most people, so although they may start the business, most of them still have a little bit of resistance due to the old programming they are accustomed to, which is go to school, get a degree, and get a good job so that you can work for someone else for the rest of your life and be
miserable waking up every single morning doing it. Believe me, there will be times when you talk to someone about the business and they are not too sure if they want to get started or not, or they say something like, well, when you start getting results get back to me. I am telling you now, make sure you do!

The fortune is in the follow up...
